Classes 8-10: Comparing people and things

P. 2 Superlatives

Last week in our class we started talking about the differences among three or more similar objects through adjectives, it means we are using their superlative form. Remember the activity we did about the Bobs family and the slides with houses, animals, professions and sports.

The following video shows a brief but clear explanation on the topic as well as the spelling rules.

Remember, we use the superlatives for expressing who or what is the number 1 out of a group in relation to a certain characteristic. For instance, Colombia has some big cities such as Cali, Medellín, Bogotá and Barranquilla, but Bogotá is the biggest of them. As you can see, I'm talking about the number 1 out of a specific group. At this point you may think that New York, Mexico D.F. or Tokyo are bigger than Bogota, but they are not part of the group I'm comparing.

 Here we have other examples:

-There have been many excellent soccer players like Pelé, Maradona, Ronaldo, Ronaldhino, Messi, Platini, Messi among others, but for me, Pele and Messi are the best.

- Walking Death, Games of Thrones, House of Cards are some vey good series. Games of Thrones is the best of them for many people.

- Japan, Canada, South Korea, Thailand and Australia are peaceful countries. I think Canada and Japan are the most peaceful ones.

Now, let's see this visual example so you can have a clearer idea about what superlatives are for.

After this explanation, it's time for you to do some practice on this topic.

P. 1: Comparatives

Comparing people's, animals' or objects' characteristics is something very common in our life. We do it when we but things, when we decide what to eat, when we talk about people.

What I want you to remember to this point is that we are using adjectives while comparing. Read and analyze these examples:

Scooters are faster than byclicles.

Backpacks are bigger than tote bags.

Fruits and vegetables are healthier than junk food.

Physics is more dangerous than English.

The following video will help you remember how to use comparative adjectives.

It's time to stop chitchatting and start working through the following exercises.
